Birthing Choices: Health Care Providers
Iowa offers a comprehensive network of healthcare providers and support services for pregnant women, encompassing perinatal professionals, additional perinatal support, and specialized resources for rural and tribal communities.
Perinatal Providers
Physicians (Obstetricians/Gynecologists - OB/GYNs): Specialized in managing both routine and high-risk pregnancies, OB/GYNs are available in hospitals and clinics across Iowa. They provide care for women and their unborn babies at high risk for complications, collaborating with primary OB physicians or midwives to develop individualized care plans.
Nurses and Midwives: Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) offer patient-centered care, focusing on natural childbirth experiences with minimal interventions. T
Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs collaborate with doctors to provide prenatal care, routine checkups, and postpartum support, enhancing accessibility of care in both urban and rural areas.
Other Perinatal Professionals
Doulas: Trained non-medical professionals providing continuous emotional and physical support during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. Iowa's Title V Doula Project offers such services, with doulas residing in the same area as the pregnant women they assist, facilitating optimal birth experiences. Behavioral Health Professionals: Specialists provide support for maternal mental health issues like postpartum depression and anxiety.
Lactation Consultants: Certified lactation consultants assist with breastfeeding challenges, offering education and support.
Rural and Tribal Healthcare Support
Rural Healthcare Support: Recognizing the challenges faced by pregnant women in rural areas, Iowa has implemented programs to enhance access to maternity care. The Maternal Health Symposium focuses on exploring solutions to improve maternal healthcare and birth outcomes for Iowans, particularly in rural communities. Additionally, the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visitation (MIECHV) Program provides intensive home visitation services to new and expectant families to strengthen parent/child relationships and encourage healthy child development.
Tribal Healthcare Support: The Meskwaki Maternal Child Health program offers home visiting services to pregnant and parenting families with Native children under three years of age, focusing on culturally appropriate care.
