Birth centers
A birth center is a home-like place to give birth, run by midwives, for people with low-risk pregnancies. Most offer prenatal visits, the birth itself, and visits after the baby comes, with fewer routine medical interventions than a hospital.
Who it's for: People with a healthy, low-risk pregnancy who want a midwife-led birth outside a hospital. If risks come up, care moves to a doctor or hospital.

Common questions
Is a birth center free?
Usually not, but many accept Medicaid and private insurance, and some offer sliding-scale fees or payment plans. Each listing says what we know.
Can I use a birth center if my pregnancy is high-risk?
Birth centers are for low-risk pregnancies. If risks appear, your midwife will share your care with, or refer you to, a doctor.
How current is this information?
Each listing shows where its information came from and, where we have it, the date a researcher last checked it. Details change, so call before you go. If something looks wrong, use "Tell us" on the listing.
Why do I have to enter a ZIP code?
So we can show the organizations in your county rather than a list of everything everywhere. It also keeps listings from being harvested in bulk.
