Safe Sleep & Cribs

In New Jersey, there are dedicated programs and resources to promote safe sleep practices for infants and help families access cribs or safe sleep spaces to ensure their baby’s safety. These efforts aim to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related infant deaths through parent education and the provision of essential sleep equipment.

Safe Sleep Guidelines
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and New Jersey health organizations recommend the following safe sleep practices:

  • Place babies on their backs for every sleep, including naps and at night.
  • Use a firm, flat mattress in a crib, bassinet, or play yard without soft bedding, pillows, blankets, or toys.
  • Share a room with your baby (room-sharing), but avoid bed-sharing.
  • Avoid overheating by dressing the baby in light, appropriate layers.
  • Ensure a smoke-free environment for your baby at all times.
