Safe Sleep & Cribs
In Wisconsin, several programs and resources are available to support safe sleep practices for infants, aiming to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related deaths. These initiatives provide education and assistance to families to ensure their babies sleep safely.
Safe Sleep Guidelines
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Wisconsin health organizations recommend the following safe sleep practices:
Place babies on their backs for every sleep.
Use a firm, flat sleep surface, such as a mattress in a safety-approved crib, covered by a fitted sheet.
Keep soft bedding, pillows, toys, and bumper pads out of the baby's sleep area.
Share a room with your baby, but avoid bed-sharing.
Avoid overheating by dressing the baby in appropriate layers.
Offer a pacifier at nap time and bedtime.
Avoid exposure to smoke, alcohol, and illicit drugs.
