Newborn Screening

Newborn Blood Screening

The Wisconsin Newborn Screening Program ensures that all newborns are tested for 48 different disorders within the first days of life. A small blood sample is collected from the baby's heel and sent to the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) for analysis. Early detection allows for prompt treatment, which can prevent serious health problems, developmental delays, or even death. Learn More

Universal Newborn Hearing Screening
Wisconsin's Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program, known as Wisconsin Sound Beginnings, aims to identify hearing loss in newborns as early as possible. Early detection is crucial for the development of speech, language, and social skills. All hospitals in Wisconsin are required to screen newborns for hearing loss before discharge.
