Food Assistance and Nutrition Education

Pregnant women and mothers in Pennsylvania have access to various food assistance programs and nutrition education services aimed at promoting health and well-being. Here are key resources available:

Food Assistance Programs

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program
The Pennsylvania Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides nutrition services, breastfeeding support, health care and social service referrals, and healthy foods to eligible participants. WIC helps pregnant women, mothers, and caregivers of infants and young children learn about good nutrition to keep themselves and their families healthy.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
SNAP helps Pennsylvanians buy food by increasing their purchasing power at grocery stores and supermarkets. Eligible low-income households receive an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) ACCESS Card to make food purchases.

SUN Bucks: Pennsylvania’s Summer EBT program is a new grocery benefits program that provides households with a one-time payment of $120 for each eligible child to buy food while school is out. Benefits can be used at local participating retailers to purchase groceries.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
TANF provides temporary cash assistance for pregnant women and families with one or more dependent children. These funds can be used to purchase any items your family needs. TANF participants also receive Medical Assistance and are usually enrolled in SNAP. Supportive services, such as child care assistance and transportation, are available to help meet work participation requirements.

Farmers’ Market Nutrition Programs (FMNP)
This program provides vouchers to WIC participants and seniors to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from approved farmers' markets. It promotes access to local, nutritious foods while supporting Alaskan farmers.

Nutrition Education Programs

Penn State Extension's Nutrition Links
Nutrition Links offers research-based nutrition education to help individuals and families with limited resources enhance their nutrition, increase physical activity, and develop life skills needed for self-sufficiency and better health.

Adagio Health's WIC Program
Adagio Health's WIC program provides nutrition information, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health and social services. WIC is available for pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, as well as children up to the age of 5. Each month, Adagio Health’s WIC program serves approximately 9,000 clients in five counties.

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), a federally funded program implemented through land-grant universities like Penn State Extension, provides hands-on nutrition education to low-income families, focusing on meal planning, budgeting, and healthy cooking to improve nutrition and overall health
