Safe Sleep & Cribs

In Oklahoma, several programs and resources are dedicated to promoting safe sleep practices for infants and assisting families in accessing safe sleep environments to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related fatalities.

Safe Sleep Guidelines
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH), and Indian health organizations recommend the following safe sleep practices:

  • Infants should sleep in the same room as their parents but on a separate, firm sleep surface, such as a crib, bassinet, or portable play yard.
  • Always place babies on their backs for every sleep, including naps.
  • Use a firm mattress with no soft bedding, pillows, toys, or bumper pads.
  • Dress babies appropriately for the environment and avoid over-bundling.
  • Offering a pacifier at nap time and bedtime can reduce the risk of SIDS.
  • Breastfeeding is recommended as it has been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS.

Learn more about safe sleep practices through the Safe to Sleep® campaign or visit the OSDH Safe Sleep page.

Free or Low-Cost Cribs
Families in need of cribs or safe sleep spaces can access support through the following programs:

Oklahoma Safe Sleep Program

Operated by the OSDH, this program provides education and resources to families, including free or low-cost portable cribs for eligible families. The program aims to reduce sleep-related infant deaths by promoting safe sleep practices and ensuring access to safe sleep environments.

Cribs for Kids Program

This national initiative partners with local organizations in Oklahoma to provide safe sleep education and distribute free cribs to families in need. Local partners include hospitals, health departments, and community organizations. To find a local partner and learn more, visit: Cribs for Kids - Partners.

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program

The WIC program offers nutrition assistance, breastfeeding support, and health education to pregnant women, new mothers, and young children. Some WIC clinics may provide referrals for safe sleep resources, including cribs.

Education and Support

Oklahoma Injury Prevention Service

Provides education and outreach on safe sleep practices across the state. Visit: Oklahoma Injury Prevention Service.

Local Public Health Centers

Many community health centers across Oklahoma offer safe sleep classes and consultations for new parents. These classes provide information on creating a safe sleep environment and the importance of safe sleep practices.

Church-Based Support

Several churches in Oklahoma City and surrounding areas offer support groups and resources for families affected by infant loss. These groups provide a safe space for grieving families and offer information on coping strategies and available resources.

By following safe sleep practices and utilizing these resources, families can create a safe environment for their babies and reduce the risk of sleep-related injuries or deaths.
