Newborn Screening
Oklahoma Newborn Screening Program
In Oklahoma, every baby is required to undergo three essential screenings shortly after birth: Newborn Blood Spot Screening, Newborn Hearing Screening, and Critical Congenital Heart Disease (CCHD) Screening. Oklahoma's Newborn Bloodspot Screening Program tests infants for 59 rare but treatable conditions that may not be apparent at birth. A small blood sample is collected from the baby's heel shortly after birth and sent to the Oklahoma Public Health Newborn Screening Laboratory for analysis. A second specimen is typically collected between 10 and 14 days of life to confirm results and screen for additional conditions. Early detection through this quick and simple test ensures babies can get the care they need right away, helping them thrive. This program is provided by the Oklahoma Department of Health and is an important part of giving babies the best start in life.

Oklahoma Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program
The Oklahoma Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program ensures that all newborns are screened for hearing loss shortly after birth. The program follows the 1-3-6 guidelines: 1 Month: All infants should have a hearing screening by 1 month of age; 3 Months: If after two screenings the baby does not pass, a medical and hearing evaluation is needed before 3 months of age; and 6 Months: If a hearing loss is detected, treatment and intervention should be started by 6 months of age. The program collaborates with families to provide support and resources related to newborn hearing screenings, follow-up appointments, and local/national resources.
