Safe Sleep & Cribs
In Georgia, various resources and programs support safe sleep practices for infants, aiming to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related incidents.
Safe Sleep Guidelines
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) recommends the following safe sleep practices:
Back Sleeping: Always place babies on their backs for every sleep, including naps. This position significantly reduces the risk of SIDS.
Firm Sleep Surface: Use a firm mattress in a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or play yard without soft bedding, pillows, or toys.
Room Sharing Without Bed-Sharing: Keep the baby's sleep area in the same room where you sleep, but on a separate surface designed for infants.
Appropriate Bedding: Avoid soft objects and loose bedding in the baby's sleep area.
Pacifier Use: Consider offering a pacifier at nap time and bedtime, which may reduce the risk of SIDS.
Appropriate Sleep Attire: Dress the baby in sleep clothing, such as a wearable blanket, and avoid using loose blankets that could cover the baby's face.
Avoid Overheating: Ensure the baby does not get too hot during sleep. Dress them in appropriate layers and keep the room at a comfortable temperature.
