Safe Sleep & Cribs

In Virginia, numerous programs and resources are dedicated to promoting safe sleep practices for infants, aiming to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related incidents. These initiatives focus on educating parents and caregivers while providing essential resources to ensure every baby has a safe sleeping environment.

Safe Sleep Guidelines
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advocate for the following safe sleep practices:

Back to Sleep: Always place babies on their backs for every sleep.
Firm Sleep Surface: Use a firm mattress in a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or play yard, free from soft bedding, pillows, toys, or bumper pads.
Room Sharing Without Bed-Sharing: Keep the baby's sleep area in the same room where you sleep but on a separate surface.
Avoid Overheating: Dress the baby in appropriate layers and maintain a comfortable room temperature.
Smoke-Free Environment: Ensure the baby's environment is free from smoke exposure.
