Newborn Screening
In Utah, newborn screening is a vital public health initiative aimed at the early identification of certain medical conditions in infants. The Utah Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) oversees comprehensive programs, including bloodspot screening and hearing screening, to ensure timely interventions that can significantly improve health outcomes for affected infants.
Utah Newborn Bloodspot Screening Program
The Utah Newborn Screening Program tests infants for over 40 rare but serious conditions that may not be apparent at birth. A small blood sample is collected from a newborn's heel between 24–48 hours after birth and again at the 2-week child care appointment, preferably between 7–16 days after birth. Early detection allows for prompt intervention, significantly improving health outcomes for affected infants. Learn More

Utah Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program
The EHDI Program ensures that all newborns in Utah are screened for hearing loss shortly after birth. The goal is for all newborns to receive a hearing screening before discharge from the hospital or by 10 days of age if born out of the hospital. Early identification of hearing loss and appropriate intervention ensures a child will have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
