South Dakota Newborn Blood Spot Screening Program

The Newborn Blood Spot Screening Program in South Dakota is designed to identify rare but serious conditions that may not be apparent at birth. A small blood sample is collected from a newborn's heel shortly after birth and tested for numerous metabolic, genetic, and endocrine disorders. Early detection through this simple test enables timely medical interventions, significantly improving health outcomes for affected infants. This program is mandated by South Dakota Codified Law and coordinated by the South Dakota Department of Health in collaboration with hospitals, laboratories, healthcare professionals, and families. South Dakota Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program
The South Dakota Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program ensures that all newborns are screened for hearing loss shortly after birth using quick and painless methods. Hearing loss is more common than many other conditions screened for at birth, with as many as 3 to 4 out of every 1,000 babies in the United States born with some level of hearing loss. Early detection allows for timely interventions such as hearing aids or therapy, supporting healthy language and communication development. Families can access follow-up care and resources through the state's Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program. Learn More
