Newborn Screening
Oregon Newborn Bloodspot Screening
Oregon's Newborn Bloodspot Screening Program tests infants for over 50 rare but treatable conditions that may not be apparent at birth. A small blood sample is collected from the baby's heel shortly after birth and sent to the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory for analysis. A second specimen is typically collected between 10 and 14 days of life to confirm results and screen for additional conditions.

Oregon Universal Newborn Hearing Screening
All newborns in Oregon are screened for hearing loss before discharge from the hospital. If a baby does not pass the initial screening, follow-up testing is conducted by a qualified audiologist before the baby reaches three months of age. Early identification and intervention are crucial for language and communication development.
