Newborn Screening

Michigan's Newborn Bloodspot Screening Program is a vital public health initiative aimed at the early detection and treatment of certain medical conditions in infants. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) oversees comprehensive programs that include bloodspot screening and hearing screening for all newborns.

Michigan Newborn Bloodspot Screening Program
The Michigan Newborn Screening Program tests all infants for over 50 rare but serious conditions that may not be apparent at birth. A small blood sample is collected from a newborn's heel between 24 and 36 hours after birth. This early detection allows for prompt intervention, significantly improving health outcomes for affected infants. Learn more
Conditions Screened: Michigan screens for a comprehensive panel of disorders, including metabolic, endocrine, hemoglobin, cystic fibrosis, hearing, heart, immune system, and spinal muscular atrophy conditions. For a detailed list of all conditions screened, please refer to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) resources.
