Food Assistance and Nutrition Education

Pregnant women and mothers in Kentucky have access to various food assistance and nutrition education programs aimed at enhancing health and well-being. Below are key resources available:

Food Assistance Programs

  1. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program: WIC provides nutritional support, healthy food, breastfeeding assistance, nutrition education, and health referrals for pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children up to age 5. The program helps improve health outcomes by offering healthy food packages, personalized nutrition counseling, and referrals to healthcare and social services.

Eligibility: Pregnant women, breastfeeding or postpartum mothers, infants, and children under age five. Applicants must meet income guidelines and be Kentucky residents. U.S. citizenship is not required.
How to Apply: Schedule an appointment at a local WIC clinic or apply online via the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

  1. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Formerly known as food stamps, SNAP provides funds for purchasing groceries. Available to low-income individuals, including pregnant women and families with children. Pregnant women may qualify without needing to meet work requirements, and the program supports families with limited income and resources.
Eligibility is based on income, household size, and resources. Pregnant women may be eligible with relaxed work requirements.

  1. Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)

Provides nutritious food to low-income pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children up to age 6. Distributes USDA-approved food packages monthly.

Nutrition Education Programs

  1. Farmers’ Market Nutrition Programs (FMNP)

Kentucky's FMNP provides WIC participants with vouchers to purchase fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at participating farmers' markets. This promotes access to fresh produce and supports local agriculture.
Eligibility: Current WIC participants in Kentucky.
How to Participate: Receive FMNP vouchers from your WIC office during certification and redeem them at authorized farmers' markets.

  1. Kentucky Nutrition Education Program (KYNEP)

The Kentucky Nutrition Education Program (KYNEP) encompasses two separate USDA programs: The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-Ed).
Both programs are administered by the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service in order to show limited resource families with young children and SNAP eligible individuals how to plan nutritious meals on a limited budget, acquire safe food handling practices, improve food preparation skills, and change behavior necessary to have a healthy lifestyle. Aimed at low-income families, including pregnant women and children.

Food Banks and Pantries
Kentucky has a robust network of food banks and pantries that provide emergency food assistance to families in need, including pregnant women and mothers. Many also offer help with SNAP applications.
