Newborn Screening
Illinois Newborn Screening Program
The Newborn Bloodspot Screening Program in Illinois helps protect the health of babies by screening for rare but serious conditions that may not be immediately noticeable after birth. A small blood sample is taken from a baby’s heel shortly after birth and tested for treatable disorders that can affect growth, development, and overall health. Early detection through this simple and quick test ensures that babies receive the necessary care promptly, enabling them to thrive. This program is managed by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and plays a crucial role in giving babies the best start in life.
