Safe Sleep & Cribs

In Hawaii, various resources and programs support safe sleep practices for infants, aiming to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related incidents.

Safe Sleep Guidelines

The Hawaii Department of Health, aligning with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), recommends the following safe sleep practices:

Back Sleeping: Always place babies on their backs for every sleep, including naps. This position significantly reduces the risk of SIDS.
Firm Sleep Surface: Use a firm mattress in a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or play yard without soft bedding, pillows, or toys.
Room Sharing Without Bed-Sharing: Keep the baby's sleep area in the same room where you sleep but on a separate surface designed for infants.
Appropriate Bedding: Avoid soft objects and loose bedding in the baby's sleep area.
Pacifier Use: Consider offering a pacifier at nap time and bedtime, which may reduce the risk of SIDS.
Appropriate Sleep Attire: Dress the baby in sleep clothing, such as a wearable blanket, and avoid using loose blankets that could cover the baby's face.
Avoid Overheating: Ensure the baby does not get too hot during sleep. Dress them in appropriate layers and keep the room at a comfortable temperature.

Free or Low-Cost Cribs

Families seeking assistance to provide safe sleep environments for their infants can access the following programs:

Hawaii Cribs for Kids: This program provides culturally appropriate, family-based safe sleep education to high-risk, low-income families and offers a free GRACO Pack N Play® crib to those who cannot otherwise afford a safe place for their baby to sleep. Eligibility and Referral Process: Health centers and community partners refer income-eligible parents to HMHB. Upon completion of the program's requirements, each eligible family receives a free Pack N Play® crib.

Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Hawaii (HMHB): HMHB offers resources and may assist in connecting families with programs that provide safe sleep environments.

Cribs for Kids National Network: Cribs for Kids is a national organization that partners with local agencies to provide safe sleep education and distribute cribs to families in need. Families in Hawaii seeking assistance can use the "Find a Crib" feature to locate local partners and obtain a Cribette portable crib.

The Parent Line: This organization offers resources and information related to parenting, including free online safe-sleep workshops.
