Newborn Screening
Hawaii offers comprehensive newborn screening programs to ensure the early detection and treatment of certain health conditions, providing infants with the best possible start in life.
Hawaii Newborn Metabolic Screening Program
The Hawaii Department of Health's Newborn Metabolic Screening Program tests all babies born in the state for 33 metabolic conditions. This screening involves a simple blood test performed shortly after birth to identify rare genetic disorders that, if left untreated, could lead to serious health and developmental issues, or even death. Early detection through this program allows for timely interventions, significantly improving the child's quality of life. Learn More

Hawaii Newborn Hearing Screening Program
The Newborn Hearing Screening Program (NHSP) ensures that all infants in Hawaii are screened for hearing loss shortly after birth. Early identification of hearing loss is crucial for timely interventions, such as speech and language therapy, which support healthy language, literacy, and social-emotional development. The program coordinates hospital screening activities statewide, assists families in arranging diagnostic evaluations, and provides resources for early intervention services.
The Hawaii NHSP aims to achieve the national Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) 1-3-6 Plan:
Screening by 1 Month: All newborns should receive a hearing screening before 1 month of age.
Diagnostic Evaluation by 3 Months: Infants who do not pass the initial screening should have a comprehensive hearing evaluation by a pediatric audiologist before 3 months of age.
Early Intervention by 6 Months: Infants diagnosed with hearing loss should begin appropriate early intervention services before 6 months of age.
