Newborn Screening
West Virginia Newborn Screening Program
The West Virginia Newborn Screening Program helps protect the health of babies by identifying rare but serious conditions that may not be apparent at birth. A small blood sample is collected from a baby's heel within the first 24–48 hours after birth. This sample is tested for treatable genetic, metabolic, hormonal, and functional disorders. Early detection through this simple test ensures babies can receive prompt care, leading to better long-term outcomes.

West Virginia Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program
The West Virginia Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) Program ensures that all newborns are screened for hearing loss soon after birth. Using quick, painless, and non-invasive screening techniques, the program aims to identify hearing loss early to enable timely interventions such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, or early speech-language therapies. Early identification of hearing problems is critical for healthy communication, language development, and educational success.
