Newborn Screening
In South Carolina, newborn screening programs are vital in identifying health conditions early in a child's life, enabling timely interventions that can significantly improve outcomes. The state offers comprehensive screening for various disorders, including metabolic, genetic, and hearing conditions.
South Carolina Newborn Screening Program
The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) administers the Newborn Screening Program, which tests newborns for over 58 disorders. This process involves collecting a small blood sample from the baby's heel shortly after birth to detect hidden health conditions that may not be apparent immediately. Early detection through this screening allows for prompt treatment, enhancing the child's chances of leading a healthy life. For FAQ on newborn screening, click here

South Carolina Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program
South Carolina's early hearing detection and intervention initiative, known as the First Sound program, ensures that all newborns are screened for hearing loss shortly after birth. Hospitals across the state conduct these screenings before the baby is discharged. If an infant does not pass the initial hearing screening, they are referred for rescreening by one month of age. Should further evaluation be necessary, diagnostic assessments are recommended before the baby reaches three months old. Early identification of hearing loss enables timely interventions, such as hearing aids or therapy, which are crucial for healthy language and communication development.
