Newborn Screening

In Mississippi, newborn screening is a vital public health initiative designed to identify certain medical conditions early in a child's life. The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) oversees comprehensive programs that include bloodspot screening and hearing screening for all newborns.

Mississippi Newborn Bloodspot Screening Program
The Mississippi Newborn Screening Program aims to protect the health of babies by testing for over 50 rare but serious conditions that may not be apparent at birth. A small blood sample is collected from a newborn's heel shortly after birth. This early detection allows for prompt intervention, significantly improving health outcomes for affected infants.
