Newborn Screening

The Louisiana Newborn Screening Program is a crucial public health service that aims to identify rare but serious medical conditions in newborns early in life. Shortly after birth, a small blood sample is collected via heel prick to screen for more than 50 inherited and metabolic disorders. Early diagnosis through this screening allows timely treatment, which can prevent severe health problems, developmental delays, or death.

For a detailed list of all conditions screened, please refer to the Louisiana Department of Health's resources.

Louisiana Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program
The Louisiana Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program ensures that all newborns receive a hearing screening shortly after birth to detect hearing loss as early as possible. Early identification enables families to access interventions such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and speech therapy, which are critical for language and cognitive development.
